Like most people who are fed up with gas prices and the oil situation, Jennifer Marsh was also annoyed. Also an artist, Marsh decided to do something about it by making an art project out of an abandoned gas station that had become an eyesore on her way to work. She came up with the idea to cover the entire gas station with a collage of artwork collected from various people around the world. In essence, the gas station would be covered with what would look like a giant blanket of artwork. The whole point of this project is to bring attention to the issue of the nation’s dependency on oil.

According to an article published in The Buffalo News, Marsh stated;

I wanted to startle people so that they would stop and think about [oil]…and be inspired to make up their own opinions about the situation and how it has affected their community.

The project involved more than 2,500 elementary school pupils in 29 states as well as the professional and amateur help of artists from at least 15 different countries to cover the 50-year-old Citgo station with more than 3,000 fiber panels. The panels cover a total of 5,000 square feet and come in all sorts of different texture, colors, patterns, prints and scenes. The thing that they all have in common is that they have something to do with the oil crisis. Some of them are even covered in plastic containers that were used to house petroleum products.

The project cost around $29,000, most of which came out of Marsh’s own pocket, but this young artist hopes that the project will get people to stop and think about the situation and form their own opinions about it.
