We’ve Heard of Electric Cars, but Electric Bikes too?!

If there’s one positive thing that the gas crisis/craze has done to Americans, that’s been sparking our creativity. Most people have heard of electric cars and may even be driving one now since they’ve become more popular. However, another growing trend is the electric bicycle. Let’s take a look at it in more detail to clear up any confusion.

What Exactly is an Electric Bicycle?

According to Wikipedia,

A motorized bicycle is a bicycle with an attached motor used to assist with pedaling. Generally considered to be a vehicle, sometimes a motor vehicle or a class of hybrid vehicle, motorized bicycles are usually powered by electric motors or small internal combustion engines. Some can be propelled by the motor alone if the rider chooses not to pedal, while in others the motor will only run if the rider pedals.

The first electric bicycle dates back to the 1800s. Now, in the millennium, the electric bicycle has experienced a resurgence in popularity as gas prices continue to rise and people try to steer clear of the gas pump. While there may be some negatives to riding an electric bike to work such as: not being able to wear your suit and tie while riding with your briefcase, dealing with the elements (i.e. heat, snow, rain, etc.) and distance to work (i.e. How long do you really want to be sitting on your bike?) I would still consider the bike as an option over spending $70 a week to fill up my gas tank!
