Vehicle Weight and Fuel Efficiency
When thinking about gas prices and fuel efficiency, have you ever considered the fact that the weight of your vehicle actually plays a significant role in how much gas you use on a daily basis? Of course, there are also other contributing factors, but vehicle weight is often something that is overlooked.
Dump the Extra Weight!
If you have a sports utility vehicle (SUV), this is probably not the best time to be a “proud owner”. Like most other SUV owners who are having trouble selling their vehicles back and/or trading them in, there are certain things that you can do to alleviate some of the burden of what it costs to maintain and fuel your vehicle. For example, get rid of the extra weight! This can apply to any and all vehicles, not just SUVs. For example, avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle. This functions in several ways. First, it helps to keep the criminals away. Often times when a car is broken into, it’s because the criminal(s) saw something inside that drew their attention to the fact. Secondly, you should avoid keeping heavy items in your vehicle because even an extra 100 pounds or so can reduce your miles per gallon (MPG) by up to 2%. This reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.
Other Things That Waste Gas
Here is a list of other things that waste gas:
- Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking.
- Do the speed limit.
- Avoid excessive idling.
- Use cruise control to help you maintain a constant speed.
