Time to Trade it In!
All you SUV owners, listen up! If you’re planning on getting rid of your SUV to get something more economical, you may want to consider doing it sooner than later. According to a recent article published in the Boston Globe, increasing numbers of car dealerships are no longer accepting SUVs as trade-ins. In fact, many dealerships no longer think that accepting SUVs as trade-in vehicles are good for business because NO ONE IS BUYING THEM. Gee, who would’ve thought? After all, the only thing on people’s minds these days is how much gas is going to cost them that week and how long will it be before they can no longer afford to put gas in their vehicle.
According to the article in the Boston Globe, one dealer was cited as saying,
The truth is more and more dealers are staying away from used SUVs and large trucks…It doesn’t pay. You can’t have a unit sitting on the lot forever.
So, what does this mean for dealerships that primarily sell Ford SUVs, Chevy SUVs and Jeeps (all of which are notorious for being gas guzzlers)? Do you think that these dealerships are on the verge of going out of business forever? After all, according to data compiled by CNW Marketing Research, used SUV sales in March of 2008 were down 14% nationally when compared to last year. With the increasing gas prices, you can certainly expect to see more and more SUV owners running to try to trade their $400+ monthly payment (not including gas) for something more economical. Just don’t act too shocked when you’re told how little money you will get for your trade-in, regardless of whether or not it’s new or used. Instead, be grateful if you get anything back at all for it!
