This is One Reason Why Cars Cost so Much

In Mondays’ article I came out against what I believe will be Obama’s support of the big three American auto makers.  The UAW has been a huge influence on American politics and their support of Obama is a very clear indicator of this.  Another clear indicator came November 18th in the form of lobbying on the part of the auto manufactures for higher tariffs.

In an unusual show of solidarity, the Big Three auto makers have joined forces in urging the United States Treasury to uphold a 25 percent tariff on imported sport-utility vehicles and mini-vans.
A decision by the Deputy Treasury Secretary, M. Peter McPherson, is expected within a few days, department officials said. The Treasury had decided on Jan. 4 to review a December ruling by the United States Customs Service that reclassified the two types of vehicles as trucks, subjecting them to the much higher tariff. Tariffs are a free trade killer and only stand to do us harm in the long run.  You, the tax paying, car buying, American citizen will have to pay higher costs on autos as a result of this tariff (and, in fact, you already are.)  The whole point of the legislation is to make foreign cars more expensive so that you will be less apt to buy a high quality foreign car that is a little more expensive, but rather you will buy a junky American car that is cheaper.  This legislation hurts you.
