The Unquenchable Thirst: Vehicles Continue to Guzzle Gas as Prices Go Up

All eyes are on the gas pumps still, and many wonder how much longer their bank accounts will have to suffer the costs of attempting to satisfy the seemingly unquenchable thirst that their vehicles have for gas. In an effort to reduce the United States’ dependence on foreign exports of oil, firms are trying to find local access so that they can drill; however, there are rumors floating around that we are actually exporting increasing numbers of gasoline and diesel fuel to other countries instead. Huh?

According to a recent article in Forbes,

A record 1.6 million barrels a day in U.S. refined petroleum products were exported during the first four months of this year, up 33 percent from 1.2 million barrels a day over the same period in 2007. Shipments this February topped 1.8 million barrels a day for the first time during any month, according to final numbers from the Energy Department.

So, now my question (as I’m sure you’re thinking by now) becomes, “So then why are we claiming that we need more oil in order to lower the cost of gas when we are, in fact, shipping more oil out the door?” Well, the article goes on to state that, according to experts, it makes sense to trade oil and petroleum products globally and then import European-refined gasoline into the United States. For regular, everyday consumers, however, who may not be so savvy when it comes to figuring out what all of the politics mean- all we see are the prices at the pump. It makes me wonder if there is a better way to communicate more clearly what is going on with the oil prices..
