The Death of the Hummer?

In the early 1990s, the Hummer came in with a roar with celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming the first civilian to own on. Now, it seems as if the Hummer will go out with a squeak-if that. With the recent woes that have been felt by sports utility vehicle (SUV) dealers, it seems that no one really wants much to do with SUVs at all- especially Hummers.

With gas prices well above $4 a gallon in different parts of the country, the only places you can expect to see growing numbers of SUVs (like the Hummer) are sitting in a garage or a driveway collecting dust and not much else. Things are so bad, it seems, that rumors are now flying around that General Motors may even shut down the production of Hummers altogether. The once proud owners of SUVs such as the Hummer are regretting ever having decided to buy an SUV. According to a recent article published in the Chicago Tribune:

‘Today the Hummer stands out for the wrong reasons,’ said Charlie Vogelheim, vice president of automotive development at J.D. Power and Associates. ‘With gas prices and global warming and its high-dollar, luxury image, the Hummer’s boldness plays against the attitude of the times.’

There is no doubt that the high oil prices are forcing Americans to rethink many aspects of their lives. For instance, instead of driving from New York to Florida, many families are now relying on such avenues as auto transport and car shipping and then hopping on a plane.
