Tales from the Driver’s Seat: How to Make a Long Trip Go Smoothly
Living in North Carolina but originally being from Long Island, New York, this means that I often travel by car whenever I want to visit my family. Depending on the situation (for instance, if I’m going to a wedding or some other sort of special function), I’ll opt to fly instead because I know that I won’t be staying that long. However, most other times I will simply make the drive up because I like the convenience of having my own personal vehicle and not having to borrow a car from a family member or worse: rent one!
For some people who are in a similar situation like me, they will often opt to use a car shipping or auto transport service. This is something that I may look into in the future as I continue to rack up more miles on my own car. All of that aside, there are several things that make my drive go smoothly which I’d like to share with you:
- The EZ Pass- For those people who travel fairly frequently by car up and down the Atlantic Coast, the EZ Pass is quite possibly the best invention ever made. Not only does it help you avoid the hassle of toll booth traffic, it is also a godsend to those of us who hate carrying around spare change and loose cash
- Escape Plan & Map-Familiarizing yourself with the path that you are taking to get where you are going will help you avoid any unnecessary delays. Be wary of road construction and always make sure you carry a paper map (in case your GPS fails).
- Know When to Leave- Part of familiarizing yourself with the roadways also means knowing where the trouble spots are. For instance, for me the trouble spots are always the same: Manassas, Virginia and Washington D.C. You never want to find yourself caught in these two areas during rush hour. Therefore, I may decide to leave later or earlier or drive up on a wekend instead of a weekday.
