Rising Golf Cart Injuries Prove that Electric Vehicles can be Just as Dangerous…

The high gas prices have really had an impact on what people drive these days. As it turns out, golf carts are no longer limited to golf courses. Rather, increasing numbers of people are putting golf carts to use for various things; and with the increasing use of golf carts for things other than golf has also come an increase in the number of people getting hurt.

Injuries on the Rise

According to a recent article, golf cart injuries are on the rise;

A new study finds that golf cart-related injuries jumped from 5,772 in 1990 to 13,441 in 2006. Many of the most serious injuries occur on streets rather than on the links, researchers said. Nearly a third of the injuries involved children under 16 years old.

Who would have thought that golf carts would be so popular and so dangerous?! Well, for starters, they’re electric, which is better for the environment and cheaper than filling up at the pump. If you live a short distance away from a store and can take local backstreets to get there (depending on where you live), a golf cart might make more sense. Golf carts have also become popular over the years at sporting events, hospitals, airports, national parks, colleges, military bases and for general personal use.

Golf Cart Woes

I can actually remember being at cross country practice in college. My coach had this golf cart that he would ride around in ALL THE TIME. During one of the practices, he left the golf cart parked in the middle of the field while he timed our workout on the track. Little did he know, the assistant coach’s son (who was five at the time) was running around the field and happened to jump on the golf cart, which was stationary but was still turned on and had been left in the drive position. Before we could warn the coach, the little boy had slammed his foot down on the gas and ended up running over three of the coaches with the golf cart, which had been left poised in their direction. It took five minutes to catch this kid on the golf cart….both a painful and later funny story.

Be careful.
