Never Say These Things to A Car Salesman!

Because of high gas prices, many Americans are looking towards other means of auto transportation such as carpooling or using a car carrier to help with their vehicle transportation issues. It’s all about saving some gas and a few extra bucks, people! However, for those brave souls with a little extra cash who are thinking about purchasing a new (or used) more fuel-efficient vehicle, there are certain things you’ll probably want to be thinking about.

When to Hold Your Tongue

According to CNNMoney.com, there are six things you should never say to a car salesman. These things Include:

  1. I love this car! Telling the salesperson which car you like will only give them the ammunition necessary to shoot you down with. They know that you will not walk away that easily. Plus, chances are that you’ll end up spending a lot less money on a car that you’re not in love with.
  2. I need to get a car by tomorrow. Don’t let the salesperson when you need a vehicle by; it sounds desperate and may cause them (as well as yourself) to gloss over other, more important details of any transaction that may take place. Remember, buying a vehicle isn’t something that should be done without a little time and deliberation.
  3. I need a monthly payment of… Telling the salesperson what kind of monthly payment you are looking for (and trust me; they’ll ask) is a popular mistake most people make because almost any monthly payment is possible so that you can get the car you want as long as the loan is long enough and the down payment is big enough. You could end up paying a lot more in the long run depending on what agreement you come up with.
  4. My trade-in’s outside.. It is not suggested that you drive your trade-in vehicle to the car dealership because chances are that the salesperson will ask you fairly early on if you have a vehicle you’re considering trading in. If you tell them that you drove it there, they’ll ask for the keys, which will force you to ask for them back if things don’t work out with the deal. Additionally, it will force you to negotiate longer, which is not always a good thing.
  5. I don’t know anything about leasing.. Never tell a salesperson that you don’t know something because then they feel that it is their job to educate you, and they will almost always educate you in their favor so that you will buy a vehicle from them.
  6. My credit’s a little spotty… Secure your finances before you head to the dealership. Know where you stand so that you don’t get pulled in different directions.

While many people are tempted to want to think of car salesmen as their “good friend who wants to help them buy their first car,” they need to remember that car salesmen are just that: salesmen. Their job is to sell you a car despite any preconceived notions you may have had about their morals.
