Michael Moore: Free Market Capitalist?

In an incredibly odd and ironic interview with Larry King, Michael Moore came across as something of a free market capitalist.  When discussing the big three US automakers, Moore had the following to say:

Moore: Well, what really went wrong is that General Motors has had this philosophy from the beginning that what’s good for General Motors is good for the country. So, their attitude was we’ll build it and you buy it. We’ll tell you what to buy. You just buy it.

Eventually, the consumer got smart and said, ‘You know what, I’d like a car that gets a little better gas mileage. I’d like a car that’s safer on the road,’ so they started to buy other cars. General Motors still wouldn’t change. They still kept building the wrong cars, and more and more people stopped buying them. (Source cnn.com)

Moore was speaking on the issue since in 1989 he came out with a movie called “Roger and Me” that focused attention on the dying auto industry.  I, for one, would think that this would not be a cause that Moore would support.  While he did say that the answer will come from the government, he did not touch on the fact that the unions have been killing the auto industry for years.  While Honda is building cars in the US and paying their employees less then the big three in Detroit, Honda is still building cars, and still creating jobs (non unionized jobs I might add).  If Detroit is going to change, the unions should be the first thing to go.
