Men and Women are Both Just Awful at Driving
I have long held a theory that men and women are equally bad drivers, just in different ways. I think of men as being reckless. A man’s accident involves driving 100mph down the wrong lane, side swiping an ambulance, while barrel rolling past a stopped school bus (all likely to impress a female.) These are man accidents…recklessly stupid, the types of things that would make your license spontaneously combust if it knew what was going on.
I think of female accidents as negligently dumb. A female accident involves backing into a building due to the fact that lipstick was being applied while talking on the phone all the while not knowing that the car was in reverse. I think I have found some evidence to support my theory. Car-accidents.com has compiled a list of fatalities by gender. The results are as follows:
total male drivers killed:29,772
total female drivers killed:12,747
These statistics are according to 2006 results. Further support for my claim comes from a 1998 article from scienceagogo.com which reads:
The statistics tell a paradoxical story. According to a controversial study by researchers at the John Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Public Health, women are more likely to be involved in car crashes than men – despite the fact that men are three times more likely to be killed when they do crash.
As reported in the June issue of Epidemiology, American women were involved in 5.7 crashes per million miles driven. Men, on the other hand, clocked up just 5.1 crashes per million miles. Given the fact that men drive an estimated 74 per cent more miles per year than women, the figure is surprising indeed.

Your theory is correct – it’s pretty obvious that in humans (and most animals) that men DO things and women ORGANISE things – i.e. men are programmed to take risks, go fast and do what seem like stupid things etc. and women are programmed to juggle lots of issues at once without focussing completely one one. We take this as a given.
However, the fact that roads were almost exclusively designed by men certainly plays a part. I have absolutely no idea what would happen if roads were designed by women but it would definitely be totally different.
It also depends on how you define a ‘bad driver’. The point of driving is to get from a to b as fast as possible without damaging anything. That is why the car was invented.
