It’s Not What It Looks Like: Truck Gets Caught Stealing Diesel Fuel
If you own a vehicle and fill up your car at a gas station, then chances are pretty good that you’ve, at one time or another, seen a truck or tractor trailer-type truck fill up on gas. However, a recent incident is now making many drivers think twice about truck drivers and what they’re really doing at a gas station. According to a recent article that was published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a retrofitted pickup truck and trailer were seized from an asphalt contractor in Ohio when it was believed that the truck and trailer were stealing thousands of gallons of diesel fuel from a gas station.
Apparently, the truck and trailer had already been involved in three prior gas thefts where the trailer was parked above the BP gas underground storage tanks at the gas station. The trailer was rigged with a trap door with rubber flaps that hung to the ground so that no one would be able to see what was going on. The truck and trailer would pull over the gas underground storage and pump the fuel into the fake trailer. Once news stations released information about the truck and trailer, local police officers obtained a search warrant and searched the trailer only to find that the first half of the trailer was covered with straw. The second half of the trailer, which was behind a wooden partition housed a large, 15-foot empty propane cylinder. It was reported that at least $4,500 worth of diesel fuel was stolen from one of the gas stations after the measuring devices were checked.
So, what can we learn from this story? Crime doesn’t pay…or maybe it does. I wonder if the criminals in this particular situation will be responsible for paying back all of the money they stole in fuel? What do you think?
