How Much Will Electric Cars Cost?

According to a Sept 18th article, Reuters is speculating that for most Americans, the electric car is only a pipe dream that we won’t see on the trailers of auto transporters anytime soon.  The problem is with the expense of these new vehicles. The lithium-ion battery costs nearly $10,000, and that is just the battery!  Imagine if your car’s battery cost 10 grand, what would the sticker price have been? Reuters writes:

“It will be more expensive than people expect,” Mike Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc, the largest public auto dealership group, said of the electric cars that will hit the market in the next five years. “It will be more expensive to make than the manufacturers can really afford, meaning initially they’re going to have to limit the volumes.”

I know that Chevy has high hopes for the Volt, but even the Volt has had detractors over the proposed sticker price.   I suppose this battery issue will be like everything else in the world, and why not?  It will come out and a very select group of individuals with deep pockets will pick them up, not enough to really make a difference in the world.  5 years later you will be able to get an electric car at a “normal price,” another 5 years after that and you will be able to buy them at grocery stores and gas stations for 1/100th the price they currently cost.  The price will come down, eventually, but will it be soon enough to do any good?
