Houston’s Major Traffic Crisis

Well if you think driving your city is a nightmare, at least it’s not Houston.  According to the Houston Chronicle Hurricane Ike caused some major havoc on the highways.  The Chronicle spoke with Jeff Weatherford, Houston’s assistant director of traffic operations who said:

Q: How many traffic signals does the city have, and how many were knocked out of service?
A: The city has about 2,500 signalized intersections, and we’re still checking them out, so it’s impossible to say, yet. Until we test out the signal, we can’t tell if it is out because it is damaged or because a wire has come loose or because power in the neighborhood has not been restored. We believe that at least 90 percent of our signals have sustained some type of damage, but the overall assessment will not be complete until next week.

Can you imagine 90% of the traffic signals not working in your city?  I think it would degenerate into something like the movie Escape From New York or perhaps Mad Max within hours.  The city, as of Sept 19th has repaired 1,000 signals, but not all of the even have power.  Weatherford said it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours to repair a signal, so all told, the city of Houston is going to require some serious man power to fix their road disaster.
