Going, Going, Gone: GM Says Goodbye to SUVs
In this day and age with gas prices the way they are, it’s no wonder that people have questions and concerns regarding the transportation of their cars, as well as wondering what they’re going to when gas eventually reaches a price that they can simply no longer afford.
Recently, the CEO and Chairman of General Motors Corporation (GM), Rick Wagoner announced that GMC will
..idle four truck plants and boost production of cars as part of a plan to respond to a rapidly U.S. auto market and align the business for a return to profitability in North America.
The GM plants said to be affected by this decision include plants located in Ohio, Ontario, Wisconsin and Mexico. So, what does this mean? Well, for starters, it may mean that roughly 10,000 people who are currently employed by GM to make midsize SUVs, pickup trucks, larger SUVs and bigger trucks may be looking for a new job in the next few months. Things aren’t getting any better with the gas crisis; they’re getting worse. With prices at the pump stealing nearly half of the average person’s paycheck, it’s becoming a real problem to maintain even a meager existence for some people. The recent crisis with gas is showing car dealers that Americans have really shifted their focus to vehicles that are more economical. It’s no longer about having a nice, roomy, big car that you can fit 10 of your friends in; instead, it’s about being able to afford to live…literally.
