Fuel Efficiency on the Rise
Some good news regarding the roads. Fuel economy for 2008 may be the highest it has been in 15 years. The change is, of course, due to the massive up turn in gas prices, which as in turn lead to a greater array of fuel efficient cars hitting the roads. Car shipping companies have their hands full these days with more small cars, and less trucks and SUVs, however even the trucks and SUVs have marked improvements in fuel economy. According to Bloomberg News:
Light trucks’ efficiency has improved 1.4 mpg since 2004, while cars have gained 1 mpg, the EPA said.
Manufacturers are working to meet the so-called CAFE standards for their combined car-and-truck fleets of an average 35 mpg by 2020, with incremental increases leading to that level.
These are encouraging figures. If we can keep our gas consumption low by driving less and by driving cars with better mpg, then we can make it less economically viable to have such high gas prices. It is only a matter of time before prices hit the ceiling and people simply can no longer afford to drive. Right now more people are trying to keep up by buying cars that get better gas millage, but it is only a temporary fix. Eventually prices will get so high that it will just no longer be viable for the average consumer to afford a trip out. I’m waiting for that bubble, and I’m waiting for it to burst.
