Destroying Vehicles to Make the World a Safer Place
That’s right. According to an article published in the Wall Street Journal, the people at Japanese car maker, Mazda were forced to make a “crushing” decision when it came to figuring out what to do with 4,703 brand new vehicles that kinda’, sorta’ sank in the Pacific Ocean.
Around two years ago, a freighter ship was transporting the vehicles overseas when, for whatever reason, turned on its side at a 60 degree angle for weeks before finally getting back on track. All of the cars had been secured throughout this ordeal; however, it was unsure what damage (if any) was caused to the vehicles while they remained in that state of being partially turned over for that length of time. When a vehicle is tipped at such a steep angle, all sorts of things can go wrong. For instance, fluids can mix together while some may have drained out completely. If there was any water damage, that could also present numerous problems.
So, instead of taking the risk and selling the Mazdas for much cheaper (because goodness knows we’re looking for cheaper cars), the people at Mazda, instead decided to play it safe and turn everyone away. They were going to destroy the vehicles rather than take a huge risk at someone getting hurt and them getting sued.
$100 Million Down the Tubes
It’s not every day you get to destroy approximately $100 million worth of brand new vehicles, but that’s what Mazda decided was best. You would think that destroying a vehicle would be fairly easy too, but this was not the case. It took planners more than a year to devise a plan to destroy the vehicles. The car makers had to have a plan as to how they were going to safely handled and properly disposed of antifreeze, brake fluid and other car fluids. They also had to be sure that all of the wheels, tires and car batteries were thoroughly destroyed beyond repair so as to make sure that no one else would try to resell or reuse them elsewhere. It turned out to be a bigger ordeal than one would expect, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it if it makes the rest of us safe.
