Criminals Break Into Cars During Cancer Fundraiser

Well this one raises the bar, or lowers it I suppose, in terms of thoughtless criminals.  While a record 18,000 showed up for the Evansville Indiana Race for the Cure, the cars of the participants cars were being broken into.  The event, which was held in the parking lot of the Eastland Mall was a massive success, but unfortunately things did not go as well away from the event.  The Courier Press is reporting that:

Burglars broke into at least eight cars parked near the site of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday.

The items stolen included purses, cell phones, credit cards, jewelry, money, stuffed animals and a digital camera. The burglaries occurred to vehicles parked on Vogel Road and North Green River Road.

Many of the cars apparently had windows smashed in to boot.  Thus far no arrests have been made.

It seems like a pretty sad state of affairs when you can’t give of your time to help fight cancer.  What thoughtless individual, or individuals, had the nerve to break into cars during such an event?  On the bright side, the Courier Press is also reporting that:

The amount of money raised has gone from $219,503 to $750,000 this year. And 1,100 survivors of breast cancer came this year, up from the 900 who came in 2007, said Susan Seiler, the executive director of the Evansville chapter.

So even though a few thoughtless criminals tried to ruin things, in all the day was a success.
