Concept Cars: The Look of the Future
Concept cars are very unusual cars. Why is that? Why is it that the designers of today make the vehicles of “tomorrow” but they can’t make those same designs for today? Undoubtedly, dangling carrot syndrome is at play.
Think about it: the last time you went to the Auto Show in your local area, you saw a lot of unusual cars that look very futuristic. And in between those flashy cars, you see these mundane, vanilla cars of today. Why would carmakers want to have those two very different types of cars next to each other?
The idea is that you get excited about what is to come, and in that state of mind your brain associates that moment with what is available now. You saw both in the same setting and therefore your memory associates the two.
Next thing you know, you’re out buying a regular car and thinking it’s the greatest. It’s something like a phenomenon! But it’s true: If they keep us wanting a little bit more, we’ll keep coming back for more.
There are a lot of awesome concept cars. Here’s a list of some of the standouts. Look up some images for these and prepare for your jaw hitting the floor!
- Pininfarina Maserati Birdcage Concept (one of the hottest cars ever!)
- Chevy Camaro 2009 (actually released for 2009)
- Ford Interceptor (very unusual car, boxy but progressive looking)
- Peugeot 908 RC (very classy futuristic car)
- Mazda Nagare (quite exotic)
- Audi Le Mans Quattro (has a commanding, modern appearance)
- Chevy Volt (an awesome looking electric car)
- Bugatti Veyron (was actually released and has an over $1 million price tag!)
Now, keep in mind, some of the best concept cars of today do wind up being real cars on the road. The aforementioned Chevy Camaro 2009 is just one example of that but there are hundreds of others! Keep your eyes peeled.

I for one am a fan of concept cars. Its great to look back at some of the concept cars of the past and see how close the concept cars resemble the actual cars of today.
