Cause for Concern: How the Contents in Your Car May Offend Others

The next time you get behind the wheel of your car (or anyone else’s for that matter), you had better make sure that there is nothing visible to other passing motorists which may offend them. Each city, state or country has different rules for motorists to abide by when driving. However, there are many people who tend to personalize their vehicles-either by paying extra money for a personalized license plate, hanging a trinket from the rear view mirror or placing bumper stickers on their cars. Another popular thing people tend to do is place flags that are representative of their backgrounds somewhere on their vehicle so that it is visible to other passers by. But should there be a rule against this?

Apparently, there are some repercussions to be had for those who are apparently “aiming to offend”. According to one article, a young man was pulled over by a police officer for having an English Flag in the back of his car. The flag was clearly visible to other motorists and pedestrians, and the officer forced the young man to take it down based on the idea that it might offend others. The motorist in the article goes on to explain:

I laughed because I thought he was joking, but then I realised he was serious so I had to take it down straight away. I thought it was silly-it’s my country and I want to show my support for my country.

But is this unfair? What about other flags that might offend people? If someone had a black panther flag or a confederate flag clearly visible on their vehicle, would you be offended? Would you care?
