5 Myths About Saving Gas

How in the world can we save some money on gas? When you ask around, it seems like everyone has an opinion to tell you how to save gas. However, how do you know which advice is actually valuable? According to an article published by CNN Money, there are several gas-guzzling myths floating around out there. Let’s take a look at what they are and finally get to the bottom of it all!

Gas Myths to Be Aware of

  1. Getting Gas in the A.M. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t really make a difference what time of the day you fill up your tank. Many people think that you have to fill up your gas tank in the morning because the fuel is cold. The thinking behind this is that fluids are more dense at lower temperatures; therefore, a gallon of cold gas actually contains more gas molecules than a gallon of warmer gas. There is no truth to it, so fill up whenever you like.
  2. Changing Your Air Filter: Every time I get my oil changed, I get the same shpeel about making sure that my air filter is clean because it affects your fuel efficiency. This is not necessarily true though. According to Consumer Reports, while engine power will decrease slighty as the air filter becomes clogged, a lack of performance or an increase in fuel consumption will be negligible. In other words, the difference is so small that it doesn’t really make a difference after all. Air filters are still important, however, because they function to filter air so that your engine’s air supply doesn’t get clogged.
  3. Fill It Up, Super! There are many people out there (my mother being one of them) who believe that by purchasing premium gasoline, they are somehow preserving the life of their vehicle because premium gas is better for the engine, etc. Not true! If anything, you are more than likely wasting a lot of money on really expensive gas. According to the article, modern engine technology has sensors that detect what kind of fuel you’re using and automatically adjusts the spark plug timing. The only result you might see is a slight reduction in the horsepower, but it doesn’t affect your fuel economy.
  4. Tires: As we all know, making sure that your tires are properly inflated is extremely important. And while under-inflated tires can cause you to lose some fuel economy, is having over-inflated tires really worth it? It turns out that over-inflated tires will actually give you slightly better fuel economy because there will be less friction with the road. However, this spells out less grip when it comes to braking and making turns, which inevitably will lead to accidents.
  5. Air Conditioning: There has been much speculation as to whether or not the A/C causes your vehicle to use more fuel. The truth is that having the air conditioning on does cause your vehicle to work harder, which may cause you to lose some fuel efficiency. However, having your windows open will increase the aerodynamic drag, which can reduce your fuel efficiency more than the air conditioning. So, if you have a choice in turning the A/C on or rolling down your windows, choose the air conditioning.
