100 Massachusetts Toll Collectors to be Fired
Well if you haven’t heard of the “Big Dig”, it is a large driving tunnel that is under the city of Boston. It’s two claims to fame are: going over budget by 12 billion dollars (yes, billion with a b…thank you Ted Kennedy), and for crushing a woman to death under 12 tons of concrete as she drove through the tunnel. After this illustrious beginning, the project is looking to add another feather to its cap: firing 100 employees.
Boston.com is reporting that:
The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is considering cutting about 100 toll collectors, a move that could save the cash-strapped agency $10 million per year.
Administration officials have notified the union that represents the workers that they plan to lay off 100 people within 12 to 18 months. That represents nearly one-fourth of the agency’s toll collectors, who make an average of $70,000 per year.
It’s nice how they are looking to save 10 million now, but didn’t mind over-charging the American tax payers 12 billion dollars over the last two decades. Another question is “Why on earth are toll collectors getting paid $70,000 per year?” I was a city police officer for a time and made half that amount. Are these guys putting their life on the line out there? Well, I don’t expect anything to run well in the Kennedy home state, so why should this be any different? I’ll leave it at that because I’m about to go and look up some toll collector job openings.

I want to retort sarcastically that OBVIOUSLY they’re putting their lives on the line when they drive to work every day - that tunnel KILLS! But in all seriousness, $70k? I’m in the WRONG line of business.
Obviously.
This is yet another example of wasteful government spending. Makes a girl want to run for office. Hm…
I have to definitely agree with Rain…$70K for collecting tolls…that is outrageously ridiculous. They should slash their salaries and give the difference to teachers.
